I always feel uneasy about advertising unpaid internships which require a considerable commitment. I am making an exception as this internship with Street Child does look like a fantastic opportunity for someone wanting to start a career in international development to get some heavy duty field experience. It was sent to me by a recent King's War Studies grad who is just off to Nepal to manage this project.
A quick look on the excellent W4MP job site will reveal a glut of current vacancies working alongside MPs as parliamentary assistants, case workers and researchers. Working as a parliamentary assistant is a well worn graduate track for those interested in working in policy for think tanks, campaigning organisations or public affairs companies. Some of the vacancies ask for specific experience, either in parliament, with casework or in a particular research area, but most are graduate level and are more focussed on applicants with enthusiasm, drive, research skills , communications skills and political common-sense.
Involve is a think tank and charity specialising in public participation. Our mission is to inspire, innovate and embed effective citizen engagement, so that members of the public are able to take and influence the decisions that affect their lives.
The Research Directorate, in which this posts is based, plays a key role in providing information for MPs and their staff in order to help them with the better performance of their parliamentary and constituency based duties. The role involves the provision of accurate, impartial, clear, fit-for-purpose responses, orally and in writing, to requests for information and analysis from Members of Parliament and their staff. Research Analysts are also expected to prepare briefings and talks on legislation and topical issues in response to, or in anticipation of, Members’ needs.
